NEWS SUMMARY:            Parkman Elementary School in the Lead in Go Green with Trex® Recycling Contest

ENFIELD (February 7, 2013) – Parkman Elementary School, four weeks into the Go Green with Trex® Recycling contest, is in the lead. The contest began on Wednesday, January 4, 2013 in the Town of Enfield Elementary Schools and runs through April 21, 2013. The purpose of the contest is to engage and educate students on the importance of recycling.

The elementary school contest is being conducted in conjunction with the Trex Company. Trex decking and railing products are made from a combination of reclaimed wood and plastic. For over a decade, Trex has recycled over 4 billion pounds of plastic. Among the items that can be collected for recycling by Trex are grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, paper towel/toilet paper over wrap, cleaning and dry produce bags, dry cleaning bags, zip lock bags, bread bags and cereal bags. Students were asked to bring these items to school where they are being collected.

Trex is donating a bird house to every school for participating and the school who has collected the most plastic will win a bench. Families are reminded to show their school spirit by sending their children to school with these items. Each student received a magnet showing examples of the different types of plastics that can be recycled.

The winning school will be announced at the Town of Enfield Earth Day Celebration scheduled for Friday, April 26, 2013 on the Enfield Town Green. Students and families are encouraged to visit www.enfield.org and click on Enfield Recycles under the heading Events to see which school bus is in the lead. For more information, please call the Town of Enfield Public Works Department at 860.763.7094.

NEW RECYCLING TIPPER BARRELS

Dear Enfield Resident:

It is my pleasure to deliver your new blue tipper barrel for use in single-stream recycling beginning on January 3, 2012. The Town of Enfield is switching to automated, bi-weekly, recycling collection. All recyclables can be mixed together in one barrel. It’s that simple!

Please read the following information to better understand how to participate in this new and exciting recycling program:

·         Recyclables will be collected every other week on the same day as your trash is collected beginning January 3rd.  A 12-month recycling calendar is included which indicates whether your collection is on the “A” or “B” week.

·         A list of recyclable materials is included with this packet.  Simply mix all recyclable materials together in the blue barrel, close the lid and wheel it to the curb for collection.

·         Please place the recycling barrel with the front of the lid facing the street and provide at least three feet of space between your recycling and garbage barrels on collection day.

·         Garbage should be placed in the gray barrel and it will continue to be collected every week on your normal collection day.

·         You may keep your old recycling bin or place it at the curb on your trash collection day and the Town will collect it that week. You can also drop it off at the Town’s transfer station. Please do NOT put the old recycling bin in the new recycling barrel.

Additional information on recycling is available on the Town’s website at www.enfield-ct.gov. If you have any questions about this program you may also call (860) 763-7560.

Each ton of recyclable materials taken out of the trash stream saves the Town of Enfield money.  By recycling, you help to reduce the cost of trash disposal and create a better environment for you and your family.

Thank you for your cooperation.  Remember:  Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Sincerely,

Matthew W. Coppler
