ENFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Enfield Public Library Board of Trustees met on July 27, 2009 at the Pearl Street Branch Library. Debbie Fiore Chairman was absent. Present were members of the Library Board: Jeanne Smith Secretary; Ann Duren; Director of Libraries Henry Dutcher; Assistant Director of Libraries Mary Palomba; and Deputy Director  of Finance/Treasurer Kim Doherty Marcotte.

The Secretary called the meeting to order at 8:40 A.M.

Ann made a motion to accept the minutes of the April 27, 2009 meeting. Jeanne seconded it. The motion passed.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Kim reported nothing has changed from last month. Everything has remained status quo except for a very small monthly dividend.

Jeanne made a motion to accept the report. Ann seconded it. The motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS

Henry reported that the Summer Reading Program, always a favorite, is in full swing. Last year over 900 children registered. Estimates are that the Library will register well over 1,000 children this summer.

The theme this summer is “Reading is Natural” and one of the activities connected with this theme is happening on Friday evening July 31, from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 A.M. (rain date Saturday August 1). There will be a “Reading is Natural” Overnight Camp-Out for children and their families. Around the lawn of the Library, parents and children will set up their tents. Space has been made for the 180 tents expected to be set up. Snacks may be brought from home.

Children from 18 months to 12 years will enjoy Yogi Bear cartoons, a scary movie, smores, singing songs, telling stories, watching the sky through a telescope and in the morning, making breakfast omelets. Supervision will be provided by Librarians and volunteers who have experience in this type of outdoor activity.

Henry also provided the Board with more exciting information on the program, First Steps, which was discussed in previous minutes. E-TV has already presented two programs which have been well received. The filming of the  series of six programs is complete and will all be shown on E-TV with plans for other groups to take advantage of these

after all six presentations have been shown.

Last month’s purchases brought great enthusiasm from the Librarians. Mary and Henry especially advised the Board how much the Data Projector has improved the function and use for the Library.

NEW BUSINESS

Henry had some outstanding statistics to report to the Board. In every area of circulation and patrons for both the Enfield Public Library and the Pearl Street Branch, tremendous rises have occurred.

A fortuitous opportunity arose with an offer from Angela Lussier.   She offered Henry  her services to present a “Career Series” which has been running  since Wednesday July 8th continuing on through Wednesday August 19th. Her approach covers the whole spectrum on current ideas in obtaining jobs. Everything has changed in methods for seaching for a job. Ms. Lussier is the owner of 365 Consulting in Chicopee, MA.  Since so many persons are unemployed, attendance has been between forty and fifty at each presentation. Henry said the he has heard most favorable comments thus far for this series.

With paperback books recently changing in size, new shelving is needed by the Library to adapt. New display shelving and end panels are badly needed. Henry also requested a Librarian’s chair to replace a definitely worn and well used one. The Board was shown the chair and there was no doubt of the necessity for a new one. The last item requested was a binding machine which prolongs the circulation life of damaged books by re-attaching covers, loose spines and separated pages. The Board was shown a book which had been newly bound and this machine does a very professional job. In this economy,  repair of books is a necessity.

Ann made a motion to purchase these requests and Jeanne seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Jeanne made a motion to adjourn and Ann seconded it. The motion passed.

The meeting adjourned at 9:40 A.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanne Smith.

Secretary
