ENFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Enfield Public Library Board of Trustees met on April 26, 2010 at the Enfield Public Library. Present were members of the Library Board: Chairman Deborah Fiore; Secretary, Jeanne Smith; Ann Duren; Director of Libraries, Henry Dutcher; Assistant Director of Libraries, Mary Palomba; and Deputy Director of Finance/Treasurer, Kim Doherty-Marcotte.

The Chairman called the meeting to order at 8:30 A.M.

Ann made a motion to accept the minutes of our last meeting on January 25, 2010. Debbie seconded it and the motion passed.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Kim reported that the Connecticard money had arrived. Otherwise, things have been relatively quiet.

Ann made a motion to accept the report and Jeanne seconded it.  The motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS

Henry had announced at the January meeting of the Board that the Summer Reading Program will carry the theme “MAKE A SPLASH” and plans are continuing for this favorite program, among them, the outdoor movie coming back and a scavenger hunt.

The benches are working out very well and there have been no problems with skateboarders.

Henry was very enthusiastic by the success that the Pearl Street Library has been accomplishing.  Over the past several years there has been 400% additional patrons added and a 120% increase in circulation. Many patrons have noted the comfort of the chairs and improvements in the computers with our last purchases.

NEW BUSINESS

In light of the budget crunch this year, the Library has lost some part--time positions and might not be able to offer Reference on Thursday and Friday evenings. One 30-hour position has also been dropped, but a 30 hour position in E-TV will be shared by the Library 20% of the time and the ratio will be reversed during the busiest Summer time with the Library using this position 80% of the hours, and E-TV 20%.  As for overtime, only what is required now will be allotted.

Some personnel have changed positions. Lisa Ellis has assumed the position of Co-ordinator of Children’s Services from which Sue Lott retired. Anna Cashman has taken Lisa Ellis’ place as Circulation Manager. Kristen Massetti assumed the post of Administrative Assistant.

The Friends of the Library have been busy all year arranging books for their annual Book Sale, the profits of which are given to the Library. This year there will be a very special addition to the sale in the form of a raffle. Henry spent approximately 80 hours crocheting an afghan of baby alpaca yarn.

The Hartford Foundation, which is well known for its philanthropy is sponsoring a grant of almost $30,000 which the Librarians are working diligently to win. The Board wishes them luck.

Henry requested from the Board authorization to attend Library conferences. It has been several years since he has been able to attend these very valuable gatherings and the Board agreed that this is something worthwhile.

Purchases requested this month are to enhance the usefulness of the Children’s Departments’ office rearrangement area at a cost of $650.00 along with Children’s wooden storage cubes, a paper back book rack for the Young Adult section and a matching wood book case to finish the set of two that already are in the Pearl Street Library, these items at a cost of $3860.00.

Total purchase cost $4510.00

Ann made a motion to accept these items for purchase and Jeanne seconded it. The motion passed.

Ann made a motion to adjourn and Debbie seconded it. The motion passed.

The meeting adjourned at 9:34 A.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanne Smith

Secretary
