PAYROLL CLERK – FT, FINANCE 

  • SALARY: to $50,878
  • CLOSING DATE:  Tuesday, December 11, 2007
  • EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:  Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma (GED) and four (4) years experience in bookkeeping/accounting work including two (2) years in computerized payroll work; any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • HOURS OF WORK:  35 hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Confidential position responsible for processing and maintaining payroll and payroll related vouchers such as federal withholding tax, FICA, union dues, pension, etc. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of the Town Treasurer.  

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular and punctual attendance; tabulates timesheet data for each department/division and computes payroll worksheets; review each divisions time as entered and make necessary changes; enters payroll information into computer for new employees and changes for current employees; posts payroll summary for distribution to appropriate departmental/budgetary accounts; prepares and files a number of periodic reports including 94l's, W-2's, quarterly reports, etc.; prepares payroll related vouchers and issues checks for same including federal withholding tax, FICA, union dues or fees, pension and deferred compensation contributions, wage executions, tax levies, credit union contributions, etc.; collects and sorts payroll checks for distribution; types forms, reports, letters, memoranda, etc. as required; maintains payroll filing systems; answers inquiries over telephone and in person; operates modern office machines such as calculator, computer terminal, photocopying machine, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. 

Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate computer and various office equipment. 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Good knowledge of wage/benefit administration; good knowledge of reporting procedure for state and federal payroll reports; knowledge of business English and math; knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to follow departmental methods and rules of performing duties; ability to make math computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed; skill in operation of computer terminal and/or PC; skill in typing neatly and accurately; dependability; honesty; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and general public.
