- EXPERIENCE & TRAINING: Associates degree or equivalent from a Technical/Trade School with a certificate in HVAC and completion of apprenticeship with five (5) years work experience in a responsible position, or seven (7) years of related experience in a progressively responsible position. Experience working with automated control systems (Powers, Honeywell, Barber-Coleman, Trane, Carrier). Must have and maintain State of Connecticut S-2 Heating, Piping and Cooling Unlimited Journey Person license. A minimum Type 1 and 2 EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification, Type 3 a plus. A State of Connecticut E-2 electrician's license is desirable. Must have and maintain valid driver's license. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
HOURS OF WORK: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible position involving the maintenance, calibration, service and repair of all heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems for designated Town buildings.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor of the Buildings and Grounds Division.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs Building Maintainers and/or laborers assigned to assist with HVAC work.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular & punctual attendance; identify, analyze, diagnose and repair pneumatic and electronic temperature control systems, as needed, with the use of a variety of hand-tools, blueprints or engineering specifications in a safe, effective manner; perform preventive maintenance, replacement and modification as needed; keep and maintain service records; inspect equipment for signs of wear; determine parts needed for repair and order in a timely fashion; make systems recommendations to Supervisors for outside HVAC services.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs related work as required. Will perform Building Maintainer and Laborer duties when assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Knowledge of all types of refrigeration units ranging from window units to large reciprocal, centrifugal and absorption systems; knowledge and skill in the use of tools and diagnostic equipment used in testing HVAC equipment; ability to understand and follow complex blueprints and line electrical diagrams, drawings and other documentation; ability to analyze complex functions, procedures and problems to find effective solutions; ability to anticipate difficulties in replacement due to building layout; ability to perform electrical work normally associated with window air conditioners, and packaged units; ability to maintain records on equipment and preventive maintenance; strong communication skills; ability to respond to and handle emergencies on an overtime basis.
