POSITION VACANCY

SUPERVISOR-HIGHWAY/SOLID WASTE

  •  CLOSING DATE:  Deadline extended to Thursday, January 17, 2008
  •  SALARY: $47,683 - $56,425
  •  EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:  Graduation from high school and five (5) years experience in public works or highway construction and maintenance operation, not less than two (2) of which must be in a supervisory capacity.  Must possess a valid CDL license. 
  •  HOURS OF WORK:  40 hours per week

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs supervisory and skilled work, working with, training and supervising crews of the Highway and Solid Waste Divisions.  Aides in planning work schedules and assigning men and equipment.  Acts as Highway or Solid Waste Superintendent in their absence.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under general supervision of the Highway and Solid Waste Superintendents.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directly supervises Highway, Solid Waste & Fleet Maintenance division personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Assists the Highway and Solid Waste Superintendents in scheduling and allocating men and equipment to such work assignments as snow removal, refuse collection, street construction and maintenance, etc; schedules and assigns tasks necessary to the maintenance of department vehicles and equipment; requisitions tools and materials required for work assignments; makes routine reports on work in progress and on completion as required by the Superintendents; maintains payroll records and records of State Aid material used and other records as may be required by the superintendents; supervises and participates in the work of a group of unskilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in highway construction, drainage, and maintenance; performs duties on off hours as required by circumstances such as snow, severe rain, etc.; regular & punctual attendance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, talk and hear.

The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and practices usual to highway and storm water drainage, building construction and maintenance, refuse collection (recycling and landfill operations); ability to make decisions in working toward assigned objectives at times adapting or modifying work methods and standards to meet variations in controlling conditions; ability to schedule and assign the work of the divisions in order to meet controlling  conditions; ability to keep records involving use of men and equipment and write routine operation reports; ability to deal with the public, associates and Town officials in a courteous manner; knowledge of basic principles and procedures involved in highway engineering, construction and solid waste removal.
