  • RATE OF PAY:  $10.60 per hour
  • CLOSING DATE: Thursday, September 18, 2008
  • MIN. TRAINING & EXP:  High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess valid driver's license.
  • HOURS OF WORK: 15 hr/wk, Tuesday – Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, 3 hours (to be determined) 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Duties involve the performing of a variety of routine caretaker tasks in the maintenance of the interior and exterior of Central Library and Pearl Street Branch Library; does related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the immediate supervision of the Library Director, or his/her designee, who issues specific instructions regarding tasks to be done and who checks to see that tasks are done in accordance with instructions.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular & punctual attendance; performs routine caretaker tasks in the maintenance of the interior of the library including but not limited to emptying all trash, recyclables and discarded library materials; maintain bathroom cleanliness—cleaning and stocking; carpet cleaning, both vacuuming and shampooing; sweep non-carpeted areas; dust throughout the library and keep tabletops clean; clean computer surfaces using special procedures; assists with library displays, set up and take down for library programs; periodic clean out of staff refrigerator; light bulb replacement and minor repairs, picture hanging, shifting furniture, etc.; deliver gift books (about 6,000 to 8,000 per yr) to Friend’s area downstairs; on the exterior grounds help maintain sidewalks front and back, sweeping and minor shoveling; and pick up trash from parking lot and grounds

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Washing Library windows, cleaning up after accidental soiling of carpets, retrieving supplies and other duties as assigned.

The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and stand.

The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move 50 or more pounds up and down stairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near the public and may be called upon to assist library staff in mechanical functions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Sufficient physical strength and stamina as is necessary to successfully perform the duties of the class.
