News Release for the Week of March 21, 2016

Take a trip to the Caribbean without leaving Enfield. White-Eyed Lizard Band plays familiar Caribbean steel drum island music like Day-O, One Love and Three Little Birds. You can relax and enjoy the music and almost feel the warm tropical breezes. Dessert and coffee will be served at the break. Tickets are on sale for $7 per person for the Friday, April 8, 6 p.m. performance.

Do you have a scan card for the Enfield Senior Center? We could eliminate our paper and pencil attendance sheets if everyone would scan their card. We could track volunteer hours and know who is in the building. Calculating statistics of building use would be a breeze. Currently, only 25% of participants scan their card. We also have the possibility of using an automated calling feature to let a class know about a cancellation. There is a very simple form to complete and then you can pick up your scan card the next time you are visiting the Senior Center. There is no charge for the card and it just takes a minute to swipe your card.

The iPad User Group meets on the second Monday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. The next meeting is Monday, April 11. At the meeting, the collaborative group shares information that they have learned from using their iPad. Some people bring problems and others have the solution. Join us!

This will be the last week for collecting Participant Satisfaction Surveys. It would be great if you could give us your input. Forms are available in the Senior Center office.

Two important evidence-based programs are beginning at the Enfield Senior Center this month. On Mondays beginning March 28, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., we are offering the Live Well Diabetes Self-Management Workshop. You will learn about what to eat, foot care, low and high blood sugar, tips for dealing with stress and many more topics. Another six-week workshop will be held on Thursdays starting March 31 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop is for people with health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, depression, arthritis, pain and anxiety or those caring for someone with those conditions. Both workshops are sponsored by the CT State Department on Aging and the CT Department of Public Health. There is no charge for these six-week sessions but registration is required.

It’s time to start making your travel plans for next year. We have three wonderful trips planned to exotic locations. Our 2017 Hawaiian Cruise Tour will depart on January 11, 2017, for 12 wonderful days exploring the beautiful islands of Hawaii on Norwegian Cruise Lines. An informational trip presentation for the Hawaii trip will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 3 pm. In March 2017, we depart for the lush rain forests and stunning waterfalls of Costa Rica. Join us as we explore the exotic wildlife and beautiful coastlines of this tropical paradise. An informational trip presentation for the Costa Rica trip will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 3 pm. And, we’re off to Alaska for an Alaskan Land & Cruise Tour in June 2017. Glaciers, Wildlife Cruises, Alaskan Ports and Denali National Park are just a few of the highlights on this trip. To learn more about this Alaskan vacation, join us for an informational trip presentation on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 3 p.m.
