News Release for the Week of August 1, 2016

Congratulations to our Enfield Senior Center Wii Bowlers. They attended the Torrington Senior Center Wii Invitational Tournament and came home with first place! Many players also received awards for 300 games. We are number one!

Mary Megan Hastings will share her experiences in Guangxi Pingguo, China where she taught at a college for 10 months. Mary Megan will take you on a journey with her to China, the cities, and countryside through photos and discussion while wearing authentic dress. Join us for A Trip to China on Monday, August 15 at 2:30 p.m. There is no charge or registration for this event.

The United Methodist Church of Enfield, along with their youth group, worked together to build a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial designed by youth group artist, Nathanial Leduke. This was a float in the Fourth of July Town Celebration as a way to honor and thank all who served. We are honored to display this wonderful tribute at the Enfield Senior Center.

Enfield Ophthalmologist, Dr. Abdul Khaliq will share information about Glaucoma on Thursday, August 18 at 1 p.m. Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, resulting in the loss of peripheral vision.

Would you like to ride your bike on the trails with some very nice people? Join the Enfield Senior Center Bike Group on their August rides. August 3, Turkey Hill Road in East Granby. August 10, undecided. August 17, Northampton. August 24, Miller Rd. in Southwick. August 31, Easthampton. CT Money School is providing two informative seminars to help you manage your finances. The first is on Wednesday, August 17 at 1 p.m. Protect Yourself: Know Your Rights as a Consumer provides important information on the topic of identity theft, elder financial abuse, types of insurance to help manage risk and financial preparedness. On Thursday, August 18, at 6 p.m., we will offer Invest in Yourself: Build Wealth to Meet Your Life Goals. Learn to identify the building blocks necessary for planning, accumulating and protecting wealth.

Care for Me At Home is sponsoring an afternoon of great American music on Thursday, August 4 at 12:30 p.m. We Got Rhythm Band is providing the music. Everyone is invited and there is no charge for this fun-filled musical show.

Take an entertaining musical journey to Nashville, Tennessee featuring stories and songs from classic country stars who performed at the Grand Ole Opry. Join us on Friday, August 5, at 6 p.m., for the Gunsmoke Band Grand Ole Opry Show. Tickets are on sale for $7 per person and includes dessert and coffee at the break.

Evergreen Health Care Center is offering free individualized balance screenings on Tuesday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. Please call the office to make an appointment. Walk-ins will be taken as time permits.

On Wednesday, August 10 at 1 p.m., join presenter Chelsey Lafleur to learn about essential oils. She will teach you how to use oils to improve your overall health and wellness. No registration is necessary.

Our Summer Matinee Movie Series continues with the movie Concussion on Thursday, August 11 at 1 p.m. Spend a hot afternoon in the air-conditioned Senior Center watching an entertaining movie.

During the five weeks of August, we are offering a trial Zumba Gold class on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Nicole, our new instructor, encourages those new to Zumba to take part in her class in the air-conditioned Senior Center. The cost is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents. What a good way to try Zumba Gold!

We are offering a wonderful eight-day trip to Ireland, with direct flights from Bradley International Airport, on March 22 to 29, 2017. This trip combines fabulous accommodations, stunning scenery and sumptuous food. For more information, a trip presentation will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016, at 3 p.m.

Last call for our summer-time trip to Boston! We still have a few seats available for our “Exploring Boston & Whale Watch” trip on August 18, 2016. See firsthand some of the sites that have shaped our nation as you follow the historical Freedom Trail. A motor coach step-on guide will share the history of each location along the Trail. After a delicious lunch at Maggiano’s Restaurant, you’ll experience an unforgettable Whale Watch excursion aboard a specially designed high-speed catamaran. • Lake Winnipesaukee Brunch Cruise, October 16, 2016. Cost: $119 per person. Trip sign-up date is August 19, 2016, 10 a.m.
• National September 11 Memorial Museum, November 6, 2016. Cost: $81 per person. Trip sign-up date is September 16, 2016, 10 a.m.
