News Release for the Week of August 15, 2016

It is that time of year again! The Annual Firefighter Picnic will be held on Wednesday, September 7 at noon. Our wonderful Enfield firefighters grill hamburgers and hot dogs for Enfield older adults and the Senior Center provides the musical entertainment. Bring a chair to Enfield Rotary Park at the Enfield Senior Center and enjoy an afternoon picnic. Free tickets are available in the Senior Center office. In the event of inclement weather, the picnic will be postponed until the following day.

For people with health conditions like heart disease, arthritis, pain and anxiety or those caring for someone with ongoing health conditions, we are offering a free 6-week evidence-based program. The Chronic Disease Self-Management program will begin on Mondays from September 12 through October 24 from 1:30-4 p.m. Registration is required.

Are you having trouble making ends meet? Would you like to check your eligibility for benefits? Monday through Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m., you can make an appointment to meet with a knowledgeable caseworker at the Enfield Senior Center to assist Enfield residents with applying for a variety of State and local programs, information and referral to services, and resources to assist you with any needs you have. Parkway Pavilion staff has gathered a few area professionals who will be giving information on fall prevention, providing blood pressure screening, and a cooking demo with samples for heart healthy food choices. Representatives from New England Home Care, Beacon Hospice, Alzheimer’s Association, and Town of Enfield Neighborhood Services will be on hand also. Join us on Wednesday, August 24 at 1 p.m.

Mary Megan Hastings will share her experiences in Guangxi Pingguo, China where she taught at a college for 10 months. Mary Megan will take you on a journey with her to China, the cities, and countryside through photos and discussion while wearing authentic dress. Join us for A Trip to China on Monday, August 15 at 2:30 p.m. There is no charge or registration for this event.

Enfield Ophthalmologist, Dr. Abdul Khaliq will share information about Glaucoma on Thursday, August 18 at 1 p.m. Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, resulting in the loss of peripheral vision.

We have two wonderful day-trips planned for September. Join us as we venture to charming Woodstock, Vermont on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. We will visit the Billings Farm & Museum & the Rockefeller Mansion with lunch at the Woodstock Inn’s Country Club. On September 23, 2016, we will explore the Connecticut River with lunch on the Essex Steam Train followed by a Connecticut River boat trip on the Becky Thatcher. A stop at Lyman Orchard’s is also included. Reservations are being accepted at the Senior Center front desk for both of these trips.

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting beautiful Ireland, we have a great deal for you! Our eight-day trip, on March 22 to 29, 2017, combines fabulous accommodations, stunning scenery, sumptuous food and non-stop flights from Bradley International Airport. • “CT Rail & Sail”, Essex Steam Train, Becky Thatcher Riverboat, Lyman Orchards, September 23, 2016. Cost: $107 per person.
• Lake Winnipesaukee Brunch Cruise, October 16, 2016. Cost: $119 per person. Trip sign-up date is August 19, 2016, 10 a.m.
• National September 11 Memorial Museum, November 6, 2016. Cost: $81 per person. Trip sign-up date is September 16, 2016, 10 a.m.

Reservations are being accepted for multi-day adventures.
• Hawaii Cruise Tour, January 11 – 21, 2017. Cost: $4799 pp/double/inside cabin.
• Irish Splendor - Ireland, March 22 – 29, 2017. Cost: $2499 pp/double (rate expires 9/23/16).
• The Wonders of Italy, April 25 – May 5, 2017. Cost $4899 pp/double.
• Alaska Land & Cruise, June 11 – 23, 2017. Cost: $4599 pp/double/plus taxes.
