News Release for the Week December 12, 2016

If you have walked through the Great Room of the Senior Center, you may have noticed that it does not look over 13 years old. Our Town Building and Grounds Division of Public Works repaired and painted the walls and columns. It looks brand new. New carpeting is on the way in January. This well-used building will have a nice new look.

As I write this, snowflakes are falling. It reminds me to get the word out about our weather closings. If the Enfield Public Schools are closed because of inclement weather, the Senior Center programs are canceled. If there is a school delay, our schedule goes on as usual. The building remains open, in most cases, for drop-in activities including the Prime Fitness Center. Notification of cancellation is posted on WFSB, Twitter and Facebook. Always feel free to give us a call to check the closing status.

Registration for our January-February class session begins with resident registration on Tuesday, December 13 at 8:30 a.m. Non-residents may register one week later.

A new fitness class is starting in January on Thursdays from 1 – 1:45 p.m. beginning January 12 for 7 classes. Body 360 is for men and women who would like to incorporate stretching, flexibility and balance into one class. Tight muscles contribute to back pain or difficulty performing everyday tasks. Poor balance increases your risk for falls. If you have been inactive due to an injury, are recovering from surgery, or are active and want to stay active, you will want to take this class. The exercises will be standing, in chairs and some mat work. The cost is $21 for residents and $28 for non-residents.

The Enfield Senior Center shows TED Talks on the third Thursday of the month. This month the TED Talk is Jane Fonda talking about “Life’s Third Act” on Thursday, December 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. After the TED Talk, participants discuss their thoughts. There is no fee, and past participants have found it a thought-provoking activity.

Occupational Therapy is the therapy nobody knows about, but everyone should. Come and learn more about Occupational Therapy with Andrea Cordis from Bay Path University. Andrea will present OT 101 on Tuesday, December 13 from 9 to 10 a.m.

If you are new to the Senior Center, you may want to take advantage of our monthly Welcome to Enfield Senior Center tour and talk. Meet in the Senior Center library on Tuesday, December 13 at 10 a.m. to have all of your questions answered.

Evergreen Health Care Center is offering individualized balance screenings on Tuesday, December 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Please call the Senior Center office to schedule your appointment.

The Enfield Senior Center is not open in the evenings between Christmas and New Year. The hours are: Friday, December 23- 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, December 26 – Closed, Tuesday, December 27 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, December 28 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, December 29 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, December 30 – 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, January 2 – Closed.
