News Release for the Week of February 13, 2017

We are one step closer to our third National Senior Center Accreditation. On Thursday, February 23, one peer reviewer will be on-site, taking a tour, talking with participants and meeting with various groups. The other peer reviewer will be off-site reviewing all of the documents related to nine standards that we had assembled for almost a year. This thorough evaluation is all a part of the National Council on Aging constituent unit, National Institute of Senior Centers’ accreditation process. Very few senior centers choose to go through this rigorous process. Only 8 in Connecticut are accredited. We are proud that we have accomplished this twice before and look forward to the peer reviewer’s visit.

Key Initiatives to Early Education, or KITE, is sponsoring a one-day experience to bring the community together to reflect, engage, and practice skills to effectively talk with each other and create common language about race and equity. Older adults in the community are invited to be a part of the conversation on Friday, February 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fermi Cafeteria. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. To RSVP call Ashley at 860-253-6502.

Because of the weather, the very popular Genealogy class will be changed. On February 16 from 2 to 3 p.m., the class will be DNA & Your Family Tree. The final class in the series will be held on March 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. and the topic will be Using Online Genealogy Resources.

Back by popular demand is the Elton John Tribute Band, Bennie & the Jets. When they were here last, they put on a fantastic show with the excitement of an Elton John concert. Bennie & the Jets are returning on Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $7 per person and includes dessert and coffee.

The Enfield Senior Center hosts a TED Talk once a month. The group watches the informative TED Talk and then has a discussion about it after. Join us on Thursday, February 16 at 10:30 for the topic, Do Schools Kill Creativity? With creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson.

Allied’s Attic brought a van to the Senior Center last week and we filled it up with donations. They will bring the van back to the Senior Center parking lot on Wednesday, February 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop off your old clothes, coats, scarves, gift items…anything really. This is a great opportunity to de-clutter. And it couldn’t be easier.
