News Release for the Week of May 8, 2017
May is Older Americans Month. The theme for the month is Age Out Loud! It is interesting that at the Enfield Senior Center we are often asked “How old do I have to be to come to the Senior Center?” People want to be old enough to enjoy our programs and activities. But from time to time we hear people say, “I’m not old enough to go to a Senior Center.” Once that same person comes to an event or class, they realize that there are many people who are active and engaged here. Get tickets to a concert, come to a dance, join the Fitness Center or an exercise class, or take a trip for a day or longer. Celebrate Older Americans Month. Age Out Loud!
Our annual Spring Craft Fair, Basket Raffle, Bake Sale & Pancake Breakfast is Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop in for the Lions Club pancake breakfast, buy a plant at the Enfield Garden Club Plant Sale, pick up some home baked treats, and have fun choosing a raffle basket to bid on. Shop handcrafted items made by our volunteers. You may also want to take a chance on a beautiful quilt being raffled. This is always a fun event and one of our major fundraisers. Please support Senior Center programs by being a part of the day.
Would you like us to keep an emergency contact on file? If you already have a myseniorcenter scan card, just fill out a form in the front office and we can keep it in our database. If you do not have a scan card, please complete a form and we will create it for you.
One of our volunteers had a great suggestion. She thought we needed someone to give tours, help participants who are new to the Senior Center, or just walk around and assist anyone who has a question. So she volunteers on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 as our Concierge. It is a wonderfully welcoming volunteer job. Now, we would like to expand that position to other days of the week. Can you help? Stop by the Senior Center front office and fill out a volunteer application.
The Line Dance Jamboree will be held on Thursday, May 18 at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $7 per person. This includes an afternoon of line dancing and a grinder too. Tickets are on sale now.
We are thinking of making some adjustments to the furniture in the Technology Room. Would you be willing to brainstorm some solutions to our space crunch? Call the Senior Center office to be a part of this short-term committee.
Fresh River Healthcare and Touchpoints at Chestnut are offering a week of health information at the Enfield Senior Center. On Monday, May 8 at 1 p.m., they are providing a talk on Memory Care. On Tuesday, May 9 at 10:30, the topic is Balance. On Wednesday, May 10 at 9 a.m. there is a discussion on Memory Care and the Family. Ask the Occupational Therapist is the discussion for Thursday, May 11 at 10 a.m. And then on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m. learn about Cardiac Heart Failure. Come to one or several of these health education seminars.
The Diamond Collection: Neil Diamond Tribute on Friday, May 12 6 p.m. show. Is sold out. Our next concert, Elvis & Orbison Show will be held on Friday, June 9 at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. You may want to purchase your tickets in advance for that event.
We are fortunate to have a community volunteer, Rich Galvez, who will give direction and call Bingo numbers in Spanish on Monday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. This would be great for those whose first language is Spanish or for those who would like to practice the language. Stay for lunch if you like. The event is free and there will be prizes. If Spanish Bingo is popular we will make it a regularly occurring event.
Do you need help with some tasks or home repairs? Call 860-253-6395 to schedule an appointment with the Enfield Senior Minor Home Repair Program. This volunteer run program assists older Enfield residents with minor repairs such as fixing railings, changing light bulbs, and pretty much anything that does not require a licensed professional. Residents are not charged for the service, only for the supplies needed.
