News Release for the Week of November 6, 2017

 

 

We are happy to see new faces and excited that so many patrons have continued to enjoy the Senior Center activities and classes. We want to thank you for making our senior center a warm and welcoming place for all!

 

They Called Her Reckless is a true story about war, love and one extraordinary horse.  Join us and author Janet Barrett to celebrate the story of an unusual war veteran on November 7 at 11 am.  When the Fifth Regiment’s Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition to the front lines, what they got was a real-life warhorse, the courageous and indomitable Reckless, who stood with her Marines for two years during the Korean War, saving many lives, raising spirits, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her.  Please register at the front desk.

 

Join Leila Bruno from the Saint Francis Diabetes Care Center for The ABC’s of Diabetes, a discussion of current diabetes and nutrition management guidelines.  Learn how to better understand your home blood glucose testing results and improve your glucose control.  This seminar will be held on November 8 at 1 pm.  Please register at the front desk.

 

The Enfield Department of Social Services is extending hours for CHOICES appointments during Medicare Open Enrollment which ends December 7th.  Call Andrea today at 860-253-6396 to make your appointment during our extended hours on November 27 from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM at Parkway Pavilion; November 29 from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM at DSS - 110 High Street; December 2 from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM at DSS - 110 High Street; or December 4 from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM at the Enfield Public Library on Middle Road.

 

Join us on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 10 am for our new seminar program How Things Work in our World Explained in Uncomplicated English.  The topics for discussion at our next meeting on November 14 will be the internet, world wide web, the cloud, GPS and use of satellites.  No registration required, just drop in.

 

How to Avoid the Greatest Financial Dangers Retirees May Face seminar on November 15 at 1 pm presented by John Dee of Wealth Preservation Group.  Learn how to map out and protect your assets for your lifetime and to build a bridge to safely guide your assets to your loved ones.  This is a broad overview of many estate planning topics you won’t want to miss!  Please register at the front desk.

 

Join us for our movie and meal featuring The Zoo Keeper’s Wife on November 16 at 6 pm.  The real life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II.  Tickets are $5 in advance for movie and meal or $2 at the door for the movie only.

 

Join us for TED Talks the first and third Thursdays of the month.  The next TED Talk will be held on November 16 at 10:30 a.m., Ellen Dunham-Jones, Retrofitting Suburbia.  Award-winning architect Ellen Dunham-Jones teaches at the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a board member of the Congress for the New Urbanism.  She shows how design impacts some of the most pressing issues of our times – reducing our ecological footprint and energy consumption while improving our health and communities and providing living options for all ages.  No registration required, just drop in.

 

The Hot Flashes are an exciting and eclectic group of three female vocalists who have made a name for themselves on the New England music scene showcasing their tight vocal harmonies and jazzy acoustic stylings.  The Hot Flashes will perform on November 17 at 6 pm.  Tickets are $7 and include dessert and coffee.

·         Westchester Theatre – Chorus Line, March 1, 2018. Cost $111 per person includes pre-show lunch. Trip sign up date is December 15, 2017 at 10 am.
